Z Series : Ford F150 July 27, 2018    Posted by: RossRR I received my Z series topper six weeks after changing my order from the V series cap I had initially ordered. I decided I wanted some of the features available in the Z product and my dealer and A.R.E. were willing to accommodate my change in direction. It took the dealer just under an hour to finish the installation, but that was fine since my day was open afterwards anyway. The dealer advised that there was a small chip at eye level on the front drive side corner at eye level when he received the topper and that he had filled it with touch-up paint. I told him that I was fine with the repair and was willing to take delivery of the topper as presented. The Ruby Red paint of the topper was noticeably darker than the Ruby Red of my truck but again I decided to take delivery as presented rather than return it to be repainted. I figured there was no guarantee that the topper would match if it were repainted and I did not want to wait another 6-8 weeks to find out. The fit would not be bad if it were centered a little better on the truck rails. As installed it overlaps the driver's side by enough to allow me to fit my finger between the truck body and the pickup cap (about a half inch gap). The opposite side is snug to the truck body so by shifting the topper a bit there will be about a 1/4" gap on both sides. I'm really loving how easy it is to lock it. It locks when I lock the truck. Also, I've had to haul some long lumber sticking out the back resting on the tailgate. The heavy duty hinges makes the door very stable when driving with it open. I have purchased 5 caps over the years and their color fastness can not be beat. My last cap which was black, was over 10 years old and yet it looked brand new. But is you want any customer service do not buy a ARE cap. I had purchased a Z series cap for my 2018 Chevy Colorado with no band around the base. It did not fit, it stuck out of the rear of the bed by 3/4 to 1 inch. I called ARE 2 times and was told I would get a call back which I did not. I took my truck back to the dealer and had them remove my cap and got a full refund. I went to a different dealer and ordered the same cap but with the band around the base and it fits like a glove.
